In Search of White Crows: Spiritualism, Parapsychology, and American Culture

Moore, R. Laurence

The author, a professor of American history at Cornell, endeavors to show that spiritualism, and then psychical research, were not aberrant activities but expressed a congruence with cultural values in America. Their appeal lay in the fact that they provided a middle ground that would accommodate both religious and scientific interests. This is, then, a cultural history of spiritualism and parapsychology. It is not always accurate, but it does deal with a wealth of information in an interesting and provocative way.
