The Meaning of Reminiscence and Life Review

Hendricks, Jon. (Ed.).

This is a collection of reports on studies of personal reminiscence and life review, with the emphasis on positive aspects. Nowhere is it clarified whether the chapters were written for this book or are reprinted, although in the Introduction it is mentioned incidentally that the 6 studies comprising Section III are reprinted. In any case, the studies take off from the original research of R.N. Butler on the positive consequences of the life review in older persons, helping them to prepare for their eventual deaths. Haight’s research indicates that life review counseling has positive outcomes, and that life review is more valuative than reminiscing and also allows reframing. The reason we are reviewing this book, even though it does not deal, except incidentally, with exceptional human experience, is that our informal work with the EHE autobiography technique has had positive benefits and encourages restructuring. There are research methods and observations throughout this book that could be applicable to work with the EHE autobiography. The first section consists of 3 useful chapters on Life Review as Conceptual Integration, especially Haight’s review of the literature from 1960-1990. Section II contains 5 research reports on the role played by the life review. The final section is on "Reminiscence and Life Review as Intervention."
