Confrontations: A Scientist's Search for Alien Contact

Vallee, Jacques

After many years of research, Vallee uncovered major contradictions in the extraterrestrial theory of UFOs he had originally favored. He raised these problems in an earlier work, Dimensions. In 1980 he stopped reading about UFOs and attending UFO meetings. He felt it was time to conduct fresh research, collect new cases, look for more appropriate methods of classifying and analyzing the cases, a new assessment of investigative techniques, and a new way of looking at the phenomenon. In this book he presents the result of a survey of 100 UFO events, 47 of which he investigated himself. He followed up all conventional explanations of these cases as far as he could. He concludes that "whatever else they may be, UFOs represent a technology capable of harmful actions" (p. 23). He proposes a new definition and classification system of UFOs in an appendix, and there is a complete case index listing the sightings covered in the book. He also presents a method for assigning credibility to an observation, or a method of weighing it.
