Seeing the Invisible: Modern Religious and Other Transcendent Experiences

Maxwell, Meg, & Tschudin, Verena (Eds.).

This is a collection of experiences sent to the Alister Hardy Research Center. At this writing, there were 5,000 accounts. The Center is described in the first chapter. There is an introductory chapter on transcendent experiences covering historical aspects, definition, reluctance to speak of them, common elements, a review of mystical experience, visionary experiences, aftereffects, and the meaning and purpose of transcendent experiences. The accounts are presented in four categories: single experiences, main experiences, multiple experiences, and continuous awareness. The authors do not provide individual comments on any of the 132 accounts, which are presented in the words of the experiencers.
