Alternate Realities: The Search for the Full Human Being

LeShan, Lawrence

This book can be viewed as a continuation of LeShan's earlier books, Toward a General Theory of the Paranormal and The Medium, the Mystic, and the Physicist. LeShan, a psychologist and self-trained healer, says in the introduction that "the central idea of this book is that we human beings invent reality as much as we discover it, and that if this is comprehended, we have a wide choice as to how we invent it and therefore, what sort of world we live in. There are . . . a number of basically different, valid ways of organizing whatever is `Out there,' and we can choose from among these the one that will satisfy our needs and advance us toward our goals at the moment" (p. x). LeShan further suggests that his thesis provides "an acceptable and useful solution to the `impossible paradox' of ESP, and to the problems of `survival' of the personality after biological death and of the existence or nonexistence of spirit entities" (p. x). In addition to the modes of being that he called the IR (individual reality) and clairvoyant reality which he described in his earlier books, here he develops the concepts of the transpsychic mode and the mythic modes of being. The basic limiting principles are described for each mode.
