Out-of-Body Experiences: A Handbook. Foreword by Gertrude Schmeidler

Mitchell, Janet Lee

This introduction to out-of-body experiences is of value to newcomers and seasoned researchers alike. It not only summarizes what we know about OBEs, it considers the various interpretations of them and their implications. There is a chapter about star subject Ingo Swann—his experiences and experiments with him. She reviews the circumstances under which OBEs occur and provides a brief history. Laboratory evidence is summarized. Next she considers dreams and OBEs and phenomena similar to OBEs such as various depersonalization and possession states. She closes with a chapter on theories and one on ethical and social factors. A useful feature is a 20-page section, "Questions and Comments," in which answers are provided to the most commonly asked questions about OBEs.
