Divine Madness: Archetypes of Romantic Love

Haule, John R.

In our classification of EHEs, we list limerance, or the experience of falling in love. John Haule, a Jungian therapist, presents "a phenomenology of romantic love, a description of what it feels like to be a lover, and an exploration of dimensions of erotic experience that may not be immediately apparent to the individual in its grip. ... I challenge the reader morally and practically by articulating psychological principles that constitute the foundation of an attitude toward and a praxis of romantic love" (p. 205). Of special importance is the concept of the third, described in a chapter on "Love’s Angel: The Creative Third," which is outside but contains both lovers and that in love’s first rapture is experienced "as a marvelous, transformative presence" (p. 208). Haule uses mythological, religious, and literary characters and themes to illustrate his points.
