Visions of the Future: An Investigation of Premonitions

Hearne, Keith

Dr. Hearne is a British psychologist who has specialized in the investigation of psychophysiological states, lucid dreams, and precognition. This work is not only a report of Hearne's investigations but a survey of previous research by others, and it covers both spontaneous and quantitative studies. The first chapter is a brief his- tory of reports of precognition from ancient times to the 19th century. There follow chapters describing precognitions associated with death, accidents, injuries, trivial events, and a small fraction which involves beneficial information. Chapter 4 consists of in-depth studies of three typical female experients and their experiences. Attempts to investigate precognition scientifically are reviewed next, followed by a chapter on explanations and counterhypotheses. The last chapter discusses the evidence for precognition, the characteristics of precognitive experiences, a review of questions about precognition that need to be answered, proposals for future research and methodology, and attitudes toward precognition.
