Awakening the Heart: East/West Approaches to Psychotherapy and the Healing Relationship

Welwood, John (Ed.)

Welwood points out in the Introduction that "this book presents new perspectives on health and the healing relationship growing out of the cross-fertilization between Eastern meditative disciplines and Western psychological practice. The chapters are primarily practical and personal, rather than theoretical or technical . . . . the major orientation of the book is to explore the healing relationship as an intimate encounter that can awaken the heart—of both therapist and client" (pp. vii-viii). He defines "heart" as "that `part' of us where we can be touched—by the world and other people" (p. viii). There are three main sections: "Basic Questions: Psychotherapy and Spirituality," with four chapters by Jacob Needleman; A.C. Robin Skynner; Jack Kornfeld, Ram Dass, and Mokusen Miyuki; and Welwood. The second, "Working on Oneself," has chapters by Erich Fromm, Joshu Sasaki Roshi, Karl Sperber, John Welwood, Adrian van Kaam, and Roger Walsh. The last section, "Working with Others," consists of 8 chapters, by Chogyam Trungpa; Thomas Hora; David Brandon; John Welwood; Diane Shainberg; Richard Heckler; Edward Podvoll; and Ann Cason and Victoria Thompson. Each section has its own introduction. The anthology is rounded out with "Notes on Contributors," a glossary, bibliography, and index.
