Death and Immortality in the Religions of the World

Badham, Paul, & Badham, Linda (Eds.)

The chapters of this volume grew out of some of the papers given at an international conference on "Death and Immortality in the Religions of the World" held in Korea in 1984. The contributors were concerned with answering the questions whether or not it is possible to find unity in the belief in some form of life after death found in the major world religions, and if so, "can it stand in the face of contemporary philosophical analyses, and can it cohere with the well-established facts that the natural sciences have discovered?" (p. 1). For each religion the exponent chosen was drawn from that tradition. The traditions covered are African, Jewish, Christian, Roman Catholic, Islam, Advaita, and Theravada Buddhism. Linda Badham and Antony Flew in two chapters argue against survival of death. Arthur Berger presents "A Critical Outline of the Prima Facie Evidence for Survival" in which he reviews the major types of evidence, and David Lorimer closes with a paper entitled "Current Western Attitudes to Death and Survival." He concludes that there will soon be "a profound shift of preoccupations away from the exclusively material towards a more spiritual, integrated, and compassionate perspective" (p. 229). In an introductory chapter the editors provide a summary view of the contributions in the book.
