Imagery in Sports and Physical Performance

Sheikh, Anees A., & Korn, Errol R. (Eds.).

This is a compilation of papers by specialists in the application of imagery training to improve sports performance. Some of the papers are reports of training research or programs involving many participants. Others are single case studies. The authors concentrate on the work of the past 10 years. Apparently the papers included were written specifically for this volume. One of the most important chapters is the first: "Enhancing Athletic Performance Through Imagery: An Overview," by J.J. Janssen and A.A. Sheikh. Any sport can be viewed as a project of transcendence, and all the chapters in this book provide suggestions for enhancing how one performs within a given project of transcendence. Four, however, seems to be of most relevance. One is "Channeling Addictive Energy Into Healthy Training" by JoAno Dahlkoetter. Emmett Miller, in "Optimal Sports Performance Imagery," presents self-instructions incorporated in several phases: Commitment, Centering, Focusing, Deep Relaxation, Accessing Performance Resources, Mental Image Rehearsal, Encoding the Spirit of Victory, and Returning to Waking Consciousness. There are two case studies involving the use of transformational imagery. One, by J.T. Schaffer, is about golf; the other, by A.A. Sylvan, is about equestrian training. Most chapters have lengthy reference lists.
