Invincible Warrior: An Illustrated Biography of Morehei Ueshiba, Founder of Aikido

Stevens, John

This is one of the most inclusive biographies of Morihei Uyeshiba, who created the martial art of Aikido. It is copiously illustrated, including a picture of Uyeshiba and John Glenn. Stevens calls it a "traditional biography," but it seems to me he sets a model for all biographies—one rarely followed. In Part I he covers the external factors that influenced Uyeshiba, such as teachers and places; the subjective factors (his consciously developed motivation and quest); and¾ often omitted in many biographies¾ the "secret factors: his mystical experiences and spiritual accomplishments" (p. vii). The second part is devoted to the development of Aikido. The last part describes and illustrates Uyeshiba’s prewar Aiki Budo and postwar Aikido techniques" (p. vii). Uyeshiba was certainly an EHEer. He engaged in many projects of transcendence, several of which he developed himself; and he had many EEs and EHEs of the enhanced, psychical, and mystical type.
