Edwards, Paul (Ed.).

Philosopher Paul Edwards presents an anthology aimed at providing examples of all possible viewpoints on immortality, pro and con. As he points out in the preface, in order to deal with the question of immortality he also had to deal with the mind-body problem and personal identity. There are 34 selections from Plato to Derek Parfit. The authors are all philosophers, although there are hybrids such as William James and John Beloff, who are also psychologists who have conducted parapsychological research. Edwards himself reviews the evidence and arguments in a long introduction. He also provides a bibliographical essay covering all the topics dealt with in the Introduction and selections. The order in which topics are considered in the Bibliographical Essay is roughly that of the Introduction. The selections themselves do not seem to be arranged by topic and no headings to guide the reader are provided, although there is one for the topics covered in the Introduction.
