New Directions in Parapsychology

Beloff, John (Ed.).

This collection of articles written especially for this book is oriented toward empirical research in parapsychology. Psychologist/parapsychologist John Beloff of the University of Edinburgh, who is a past president of both the Society for Psychical Research and the Parapsychological Association, provides an overview of parapsychology, its findings, methodology, and theoretical implications. Various key aspects of parapsychology are treated in depth by experts in each area: Helmut Schmidt on "Instrumentation in the Parapsychological Laboratory," Charles Honorton on "ESP and Altered States of Consciousness," K.R. Rao on "Psi and Personality," John Randall on "Biological Aspects of Psi," J.G. Pratt's "In Search of the Consistent Scorer," Hans Bender on "Modern Poltergeist Research," and W.G. Roll takes "A New Look at the Survival Problem." In a postscript, Arthur Koestler discusses parapsychology in relation to the sciences, especially physics. Each chapter has its own synopsis and bibliography, and Beloff provides a glossary of terms.
