The Way of the Dream: Conversations on Jungian Dream Interpretation

Franz, Marie-Louise von, & Boa, Fraser

This work is based on a documentary film series produced and directed by Boa. Jungian Von Franz describes what she has learned from her research on over 65,000 dreams. In each of the 20 chapters, the text consists of questions from Boa and answers from Von Franz. In the introductory chapter, which is about her research in general, she recommends that the dreamer not work with his or her dreams because they are generally about the dreamer’s blind spot. There are three chapters on the basic psychology of Jung. Two chapters concern dreams of "our culture," which is not clearly identified, but presumably Christian Europe. There are 5 chapters on dreams revealing the psychology of men and another 5 on that of women. The last four chapters seem most relevant to exceptional human experience—on the liberation of the heart and of relationship, which deal with the reevaluation of personal feeling rather than being overly rational. The penultimate chapter is on dreams over a lifetime and the last on the "maker of dreams." Von Franz makes the intriguing suggestion that dreams are "ultimately the voice of cosmic matter in us" (p. 217). She describes and discusses some interesting examples of dreams of dying persons.
