Small Ecstasies

Owens, Claire Myers

Owens is a mystic who has apparently been able to remain open to the infinite mystical experience all of her life, though she too succumbed to society's dictates of how life "should" be lived with reason and decorum. She also underwent a dark night of several years and came out feeling reborn. This is primarily autobiographical work in which she describes many of her experiences. It is notable for the wide range of triggering circumstances described: wind, thinking, moonlight, flowers (scent), children, poetry, Manhattan, writing, sea and sand, winter, sun and earth, painting, music, dancing, sculpture, architecture, drama, love, and summer. She also anthologizes what various Bibles, psychologists, and poets have written about the mystical life.
